The Hungry Woman

I gave at the Food Bank

and

she still went hungry.

Stood in line at the grocery to buy a sack of food

and she is crying.  Sobbing, she cannot feed herself

or her children.

Just like me, just like you.  She is human, made a few

mistakes; nothing major.  Now, she cannot eat.

She has no food.  Chewing cardboard helps the hunger

pangs subside.  Reduced to eating dog food a few times

but she was concerned with the bowel distress she experienced.

At the coffee shop, watching the customers come and go, she

ate their leavings.  One-half cup of Starbucks, a broken croissant

and one time, a cinnamon roll hot to the touch.

No matter what I do; she is still hungry.
